villainous friend<p>I read once that Chinese people learn their history not in school, but from <a href="https://federatedfandom.net/tags/JinYong" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JinYong</span></a>, and thought, &quot; One billion people can&#39;t be wrong,&quot; so the next day I started reading LoCH. The project of working my way through Jin Yong&#39;s ouevre has been slowed by my needing to read everything *around* the history in the books, but this is just as I planned it.</p>
Yilin Wang (she/they)<p>Happy 100th birthday to Jin Yong! Here are some photos from my visit to the Jin Yong gallery in HK in 2018. </p><p>Also, a link to a blogpost I wrote about him from my website archives: <a href="https://yilinwang.com/jin-yong-wuxia/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">yilinwang.com/jin-yong-wuxia/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/wuxia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wuxia</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/cdrama" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cdrama</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/jinyong" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>jinyong</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/hongkong" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hongkong</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/%E9%87%91%E5%BA%B8" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>金庸</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/%E6%AD%A6%E4%BE%A0" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>武侠</span></a></p>
villainous friend<p>Hey, great news! A Past Unearthed, volume one of the English translation of <a href="https://federatedfandom.net/tags/JinYong" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JinYong</span></a>’s Return of the Condor Heroes, is now out! <a href="https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/a-past-unearthed-return-of-the-condor-heroes-volume-1-jin-yong/7422747" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">uk.bookshop.org/p/books/a-past</span><span class="invisible">-unearthed-return-of-the-condor-heroes-volume-1-jin-yong/7422747</span></a> <a href="https://federatedfandom.net/tags/wuxia" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>wuxia</span></a> </p><p>Less great news: I really rate Gigi Chang’s translation, but the awful (and inconsistent) translation of characters’ names that Anna Holmwood started in Legend of the Condor Heroes is still with us. Argh.</p>
villainous friend<p><a href="https://federatedfandom.net/tags/wuxia" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>wuxia</span></a> thought of the day no.2, re: <a href="https://federatedfandom.net/tags/JinYong" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JinYong</span></a>’s Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils.</p><p>This was in response to someone sharing this post about plot tropes created/popularised by Jin Yong: <a href="https://flamingwell.tumblr.com/post/727218062233927681" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">flamingwell.tumblr.com/post/72</span><span class="invisible">7218062233927681</span></a></p>
villainous friend<p>An interesting post on characters with disabilities in <a href="https://federatedfandom.net/tags/JinYong" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JinYong</span></a>&#39;s Condor Trilogy: <a href="https://thenoteswhichdonotfit.wordpress.com/2015/05/01/characters-with-disabilities-in-the-condor-trilogy/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">thenoteswhichdonotfit.wordpres</span><span class="invisible">s.com/2015/05/01/characters-with-disabilities-in-the-condor-trilogy/</span></a></p><p>The same blogger has a series of posts on sexism and misogyny in Jin Yong&#39;s works, which is well worth reading: <a href="https://thenoteswhichdonotfit.wordpress.com/tag/rambling-series-about-sexism-in-jin-yong-stories/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">thenoteswhichdonotfit.wordpres</span><span class="invisible">s.com/tag/rambling-series-about-sexism-in-jin-yong-stories/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://federatedfandom.net/tags/wuxia" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>wuxia</span></a></p>
villainous friend<p>An alternate translation of the first half-chapter of <a href="https://federatedfandom.net/tags/LegendOfTheCondorHeroes" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>LegendOfTheCondorHeroes</span></a>, from 1997: <a href="https://wuxiawanderings.com/an-early-translation-of-legend-of-the-condor-heroes-that-never-came-to-be/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">wuxiawanderings.com/an-early-t</span><span class="invisible">ranslation-of-legend-of-the-condor-heroes-that-never-came-to-be/</span></a></p><p>This was supposed to have been the official English translation, by John Minford and Sharon Lai, but for some reason the project never came to fruition. <a href="https://federatedfandom.net/tags/wuxia" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>wuxia</span></a> <a href="https://federatedfandom.net/tags/JinYong" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JinYong</span></a></p>
villainous friend<p>I’m still kind of sad that Murong Fu didn’t turn out to be a better person, you know? Better as in more humane, less arrogant, less fucking twisty and more open to others, or more loyal to his underlings—any one of those would have sufficed. I had high hopes for him but he was so single-minded about his goal, and yet so inconsistent in his approach to it, that he failed in everything. <a href="https://federatedfandom.net/tags/wuxia" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>wuxia</span></a> <a href="https://federatedfandom.net/tags/JinYong" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JinYong</span></a></p>
