I caught one of those moments this morning, where sunrise and a nearly full moon are visible in the sky at the same time; sibling illuminaries greeting each other across the planet.

These moments are fleeting, it's only about 10 minutes before the sunrise washes out the moon's light.

I'm not really a morning person, but I was compelled to say a prayer. Since we Pagans find power in the liminal, I wonder what kind of magick could be done at these precious times?

[Review] We not only learn about Michelle Tea’s life, but also how those experiences shaped her practice, how her practice evolved, and how she evolved as a person as well. However, there is none of that holier than thou attitude that some might expect. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Today in Labor History March 9, 1902: Actor Will Geer was born. Best known for his role as Grandpa Walton in the long-running series, “The Waltons,” Geer also appeared in the groundbreaking film, “Salt of the Earth,” which portrayed the struggle of Mexican American workers at the Empire Zinc Mine. Because of his activism on labor and political issues, he was blacklisted in Hollywood for many years. In 1934, he became a member of the Communist Party. He also met LGBTQ activist Harry Hay that year and they became lovers. Together, they supported the 1934 San Francisco General Strike and demonstrated against fascism and for workers’ rights. Hay was a co-founder of the Mattachine Society, the first major gay rights group in the United States, and the Radical Faeries, an anarcho-pagan queer spiritual-political movement.

#Spring #snow? Maybe kinda but really early March is still winter here. After warm and dry weather for a while, we had fresh snow Monday- not cold, just near average- a little above freezing daytime, colder nights. The moisture is important for soil, trees, wetland recharging etc.

If you've been a pagan for a while, you run into the same questions over and over again. It can be difficult to come up with quick, easy to understand answers to a topic as complex as religious beliefs when you're like, standing in line at the grocery checkout.

I've learned that the best strategy is to somewhat meet their expectations, and then direct the next question to a simpler, more specific topic with your answer.

Here are some that I've developed over the years that seem to work:

Q: "What is paganism?"
A: "It's a nature-centered religion where we believe in many gods, kinda like Buddhism."
(This gives people a frame of reference to something they have heard of before, even though it's not perfectly accurate.)

Q: Do you worship Satan?
A: Not personally, though pagans worship all dofferent kinds of gods. As long as no harm is being done, we don't tell people which gods to worship.
(Emphasizing the polytheistic nature of paganism works best, especially for christians, who have to get over that binary good vs. evil idea first if you want to reach them)

Q: Do you do spells/believe in magic?
A: Yeah, a spell is just like a prayer with ingredients. I make a brew, light a candle, and ask the universe for help. I mean, it can't hurt, amiright?
(Sounds a lot less cool and mystical like that, but it appeals to reason.)

Q: So are you, like, a witch?
A: Yeah, I practice witchcraft every time I work in my garden, lol. It sounds way cooler than it is, it's mostly meditating and lighting incense.
(Don't tell what witchcraft *is*, focus on what it looks like.)

Sometimes I make words as well as art. What seems like an age ago (nearly 2 years I think) I wrote an essay on wisdom @fiogedeparma and @janemeredithauthor’s Pearl Pentacle book. My box of contributors copies arrived a couple of days ago. Order your copy now (ideally from independent book stores)…. It’s showing up on shelves in the US around about now, next month for UK folk.

Thank The Lady, it's Friday! #FridayPaganPoll number 90:

What phases of the Moon do you regularly celebrate?

(By "celebrate" I mean any ritual act that you are doing because of the moon phase. Not only spells but meditation, writing, art, cleaning, cooking, having tea, or even just going outside and saying, "Hey, moon!")

An interesting passage to contemplate, from the Hermetica:

“Mankind is twofold- in the body mortal but immortal in the essential man. Even though he is immortal and has authority over all things, mankind is affected by mortality because he is subject to fate; thus, although man is above the cosmic framework, he became a slave within it. He is androgyne because he comes from an androgyne father, and he never sleeps because he comes from one who is sleepless. Yet love and sleep are his masters.”

Corpus Hermeticum 1:15, Copenhaver translation
#Pagan #Polytheism

Hail Freya! Here's my 89th #FridayPaganPoll!

I consider there to be 4 broad categories of Pagans:

*Witch- Eclectic, Wicca, Wheel of the Year, folk magick, god-worship is optional.
*Polytheist- Devotional, religious studies, deity and pantheon worship, prayers and offerings, magick is optional.
*Occultist- Thelema, alchemy, ceremonial magick, trances, summonings, experiments.
*Animist- Nature-worship, seasonal celebration, meditation, spending time outdoors, minimal magick or god-worship.

For this poll, I'm asking, which do you lean most towards? I know, I know, it's difficult, but if you had to pick just one?

In Norse mythology, the father of the Jötunn, Ymir, was taken apart by the gods, and his body was used to make Midgard. His teeth became mountains, and his head became the dome of the sky.

There are many comparative myths throughout the world where a primordial being is defeated, broken apart, and the universe becomes ordered.

I think even our modern day creation myth, the Big Bang, has echoes of these long-held human truths. An initial high-density entity existing in a void breaks up into pieces, and then the pieces become ordered. We are all made of the resulting star stuff.

Thank Goddess, it's Freyasday! Here's your #FridayPaganPoll:

You do not need money to practice paganism. There is no virtue in spending less or more on your practice in relation to your means.

That being said, how much have you spent on your current setup?

Take a look at your main working altar, or if you don't have an altar, the main objects you use in your practice, and give a rough estimate of how much you personally paid for all of it. (In your local currency, and gifts don't count)
