"Bluesky is a nascent “Twitter-like” and decentralized social media network with novel features and unprecedented data access. This paper provides a characterization of its interaction network, studying the political leaning, polarization, network structure, and algorithmic curation mechanisms of five million users. The dataset spans from the website’s first release in February of 2023 to May of 2024. We investigate the replies, likes, reposts, and follows layers of the Bluesky network. We find that all networks are characterized by heavy-tailed distributions, high clustering, and short connection paths, similar to other larger social networks. BlueSky introduced feeds—algorithmic content recommenders created for and by users. We analyze all feeds and find that while a large number of custom feeds have been created, users’ uptake of them appears to be limited. We analyze the hyperlinks shared by BlueSky’s users and find no evidence of polarization in terms of the political leaning of the news sources they share. They share predominantly left-center news sources and little to no links associated with questionable news sources. In contrast to the homogeneous political ideology, we find significant issues-based divergence by studying opinions related to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Two clear homophilic clusters emerge: Pro-Palestinian voices outnumber pro-Israeli users, and the proportion has increased. We conclude by claiming that Bluesky—for all its novel features—is very similar in its network structure to existing and larger social media sites and provides unprecedented research opportunities for social scientists, network scientists, and political scientists alike."

I'm gonna list out my interests, and there's a ton of 'em. Classic autism move, getting obsessed with weird topics that stick with you forever.

Heads up, #Fediverse, you might lose it when I drop 100+ hashtags in one post. That's just how autism rolls I guess.

#Mozilla is made up of several organizations, one of which is the #MozillaCorporation, which develops Firefox and other technologies, and another is its nonprofit and tax-exempt #MozillaFoundation, which oversees Mozilla’s corporate governance structure and sets the browser maker’s policies. Much of Mozilla’s work focused on advocating for #privacy, #inclusion, and #decentralization of #technologies, and “to create #safer, more #transparent online experiences for #everyone,” which ultimately benefit the #browser maker and its #users.

Announcing the layoffs in an email to all employees on October 30, the Mozilla Foundation’s executive director #NabihaSyed confirmed that two of the foundation’s major divisions — #Advocacy and #GlobalPrograms — are “no longer a part of our structure.””

There you go. One side of Mozilla builds the tools of the Internet, the other does… I can’t for the life of me see what. It’s the #MozillaFoundation who cant engineer the tools that are doing “deals” with others to make things safer.

The power to make change for the better of the Internet is being moved from direct impact, ie: basic technology and applied applications TO soft corporate influence through manifestos, papers, jobs and pay for influencers and collaborations with third parties…

I know what is more effective. Basic engineering and applied products because it scales.

You’ve probably heard it by now, or have seen my many posts on here about Bluesky, and their false claims of decentralization, or of what kind of social network they’re even trying to be. Tech is political, yes. Let’s unpack the key *political* concepts behind *technical* features that indicate a good sign (singular because they have to be complete) for platforms:
1. #Decentralization - expression of celebrating multiple cultures. For-profit organizations will do their best to dilute this concept because multiple voices are harder to sell
2. #Federation - the layer on top of decentralization that allows interaction between cultures; it facilitates “crossing borders”
3. #SelfHosting - empowering individuals and communities to have sovereignty on their digital lives

What I find fascinating as an autistic person is how often I envision an anarcho-syndicalist society. Every day, I imagine a world built on freedom, solidarity, and mutual aid, a society where people are empowered to live with dignity and autonomy.

Yet, when I look around me, I see the overwhelming reality of the system I’ve been suppressed by for nearly 25 years. It’s a system that feels broken, unjust, and dehumanizing, a constant reminder of the garbage we’re forced to endure.

The lack of an algorithm sometimes makes me lose track of my timeline. And that’s okay.

Because in return, as I scroll, I come across boosts and posts from people I don’t know. Real people - not bots, not paid influencers pushing a product.

I see stunning photos taken by someone with just 10 followers - photos I’d never see on a commercial platform. I read opinions, ideas, and advice from everyday people, like me, passionate and eager to share their thoughts with others.

This is what the Fediverse is about: communication, sharing, dialogue - not numbers.

🚨 Fixing the PKI Mess: CAA + Your Own CA via DNS 🚨

Right now, any CA can issue a certificate for your domain. Even if you set a CAA record (`issue "letsencrypt.org"`), it only controls *who* can issue, not what cert is valid. This is broken.

🔐 What if we could fix this using DNS?

#Introducing CAA+CA Fingerprint: Self-Sovereign Certificate Authority
Instead of just saying *which CA can issue*, you publish your own CA's fingerprint in DNS. If your CA issues a cert for `awesomecars.com`, browsers should validate it against the DNS-published CA key.

🔥 How It Works
You run your own CA (because why trust the cartel?). You then publish:
1️⃣ A CAA record specifying your own CA (with a fingerprint! 🔥)
2️⃣ A DNS record with your CA’s public key (like DKIM but for TLS!)

🔹 Example DNS Setup for `awesomecars.com`:
```
awesomecars.com. IN CAA 0 issue "pki.awesomecars.com; sha256=abcd1234..."
pki.awesomecars.com. IN CERT 6 0 0 (--BEGIN CERTIFICATE-- ....)
```
Now, only certs signed by your CA are valid for `awesomecars.com`, even if another CA is tricked into issuing a rogue cert. No more CA hijacking!

🚀 Why Is This Better Than the Current CA Model?
✅ Self-Sovereign Identity: If you own the domain, you should own its PKI.
✅ Prevents Rogue Certs: No government or rogue CA can fake a cert for your domain.
✅ Works Like DKIM for Email: Your CA’s public key is stored in DNSSEC-protected records, just like DKIM keys for email signing.
✅ No More External Trust Issues: You control your CA entirely, instead of relying on Google’s CA store.
✅ Perfect for Self-Hosting & Internal Networks: No need for external CA trust—your DNS is your trust model.

🔥 Why Isn’t This a Thing Already?
Big Tech hates this idea because it removes their control:
❌ Google wants Certificate Transparency (CT), where they control which certs are logged.
❌ Commercial CAs make $$$ selling certs. This kills their business.
❌ DNSSEC adoption is intentionally kept low by the same companies who don’t want this to succeed.

Browsers refuse to support TLSA for the same reason—they want centralized CA trust, not self-hosted PKI.

🔗 Who Needs to Implement This?
🚀 Self-hosters & Homelabs: Use this for your own infrastructure.
🚀 Email providers: Stop relying on public CAs!
🚀 Privacy-focused projects (Tor, Matrix, XMPP, Fediverse, etc.): A true decentralized PKI alternative.
🚀 Fediverse devs: Let’s push for DNS-based CA validation!

What do you think? Would you trust your own CA in DNS over some random commercial CA?

🔁 Boost this if you want a decentralized PKI revolution!

🔥 This keeps the focus on self-hosting your own CA, highlights the security flaws of current PKI, and calls out Big Tech’s resistance to decentralized trust.

For some, joining Mastodon might seem risky because "the server could shut down at any time" or because it's managed by a single administrator. While these concerns are understandable, Mastodon has far more safeguards in place compared to centralized platforms:

1. Admins are typically experienced sysadmins with a strong passion for server management.

2. It's generally recommended to have multiple admins (we have four).

3. Many servers have financial plans in place, such as donation systems. We have my company backing things up.

4. Infrastructure is often cost-effective, keeping operating costs low.

A few additional points to consider:

1. No server - or anything in life - is immortal. That's exactly why I chose the name mementomori.social (the stoic phrase "memento mori" means "remember death").

2. Web services come and go, but longevity is possible. My first website has been online continuously for 27 years (since 1998). While I've migrated servers a few times, the site itself has never gone offline. It will most likely happen after I pass away, but I hope my descendants keep it online.

Unlike centralized platforms - especially newer ones - that rely on user growth and profitability, investors can pull the plug at any time.

The decentralized Fediverse operates differently: sysadmins are committed to keeping their servers online and do so out of dedication, not for monetary gain.

Are you truly anti-capitalist? Then it’s time to cut ties with the mainstream capitalist platforms that are feeding the very system you oppose. TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook Messenger, BeReal, WhatsApp, and countless others are all part of the capitalist machine that thrives on your consumption and engagement.

Every time you log onto these platforms, you’re contributing to a cycle of exploitation and profit-driven motives. The #Fediverse may not be a perfect solution, but it’s a space where anti-capitalist voices can thrive far more than in the cesspools of proprietary platforms owned by Big Tech.

Feeling sad because your friends aren’t on these alternative platforms? That’s just capitalism whispering in your ear, convincing you that your worth is tied to your social media presence. Let go of that notion!

Fighting capitalism starts with recognizing that your needs don’t dictate your value. The very idea of comparing human worth is rooted in capitalist ideology—so let’s dismantle that one step at a time.

Shut up and break free from capitalism!
