In the second episode the waiter is taking a day off to go to the police precinct. The cook is asked to take an order off a customer in the dining room. He says "I'm not good interfacing with people" the boss corrects him, " You mean you're not good with white people" This made me thinking, maybe this is me... but nah, I am the same with Chinese people too #actuallyAutistic #Chinese

Watching "Interior Chinatown", it's a series about a Chinese waiter who gets involved in a police case. It's a comedy. I am enjoying it 😍 there are lots of inside (Cantonese diaspora) jokes and not too much stereotyping - inevitable in these types of shows. Worth a watch if you're bored but don't take it too seriously #Chinese #Cantonese

A river ‘died’ overnight in #Zambia after an acidic waste spill at a #Chinese-owned #mine

KITWE, Zambia (AP) — "Authorities and environmentalists in Zambia fear the long-term impact of an acid spill at a Chinese-owned mine that contaminated a major river and could potentially affect millions of people after signs of #pollution were detected at least 100 kilometers (60 miles) downstream.

"The spill happened on Feb. 18 when a tailings dam that holds acidic waste from a #CopperMine in the north of the country collapsed, according to investigators from the Engineering Institution of Zambia.

"The collapse allowed some 50 million liters of waste containing concentrated acid, dissolved solids and heavy metals to flow into a stream that links to the #KafueRiver, Zambia’s most important waterway, the engineering institution said.

"'It is an #environmental disaster really of catastrophic consequences,' said Chilekwa Mumba, an environmental activist who works in Zambia’s Copperbelt Province."

I’ve gone down a rabbit hole on the Five Star Armband “五星出东方利中国”护膊

zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E2%80%9

and wonder how the last part of the associated text (四夷服單于降與天無極) was reconstructed. According to this rather handwavy article by collating other textile fragments but does anyone have a ref to a more detailed account?

One of the most useful things I did was to take the Outlier course. Expensive, yes, but I'm a geek when it comes to learning how things work. Understanding this about Chinese characters not only helped me learn better but also helped me understand the logic, philosophical and historical reasons behind why each character was written this way.

The #memoir I wrote with Dr. Bruce Miller is now available in #Chinese. Thank you Johns Hopkins UP & East China Normal UP. According to this article, "#China has the world's largest population of patients with #dementia, and #Alzheimer's disease and other dementias (ADOD) is the fifth leading cause of death in China." I hope this translation finds its way to people who are looking for information about #brain health, #grief, and #caregiving.

#Thailand is fighting #ScamCentres on at least 2 fronts, as serious organized crime has become entrenched in neighbouring countries. …the huge size of these compounds –…most lucrative in #Myanmar & #Cambodia – pose a threat even to #US security. The…civil war in Myanmar…has opened the door to #Chinese criminal networks who have set up shop in #Myawaddy &…further south on the #ThaiMyanmar border.”asiafinancial.com/thousands-in

What I really like about meeting other southern Chinese people in the diaspora around the world is sometimes Mandarin is all of our shared language and we love to speak it badly to each other. Speaking Mandarin as far away from the Beijing / northern accent is an act of pride for me

@MeanwhileinCanada in the end: does #Canada want to be a #Chinese or #Russian colony, #Europe will probably be a #Russia colony, #USA probably a #China colony...

mark my words shortly after taking #Taiwan and #USA doing nothing

#China will take #Australia because it's very close and already full of #China X-D

Before #Xianxia got popular in the West be cause of dramas like Till the End of the Moon and Love Between Fairy and Devil, we watched these types of xianxias, which are based on Chinese mythology. This is 八仙过海 "Eight Immortals Cross the Sea".
Back then, xianxia was about immortals saving the world, not about them falling in love 😉.

Found a fun English-language site for learning #Zhuyin, evidently geared to Anglophone Putonghua/Hanyu speakers--which just happens to describe me. dong-chinese.com/learn/sounds/ The site uses pinyin as an entry point and Simplified characters in their examples.

At first it was pretty brain-breaking to try to associate all these new (and/or confusingly familiar) symbols with these sounds, but broken up into lessons it's not as intimidating and I kind of like it! I feel like the system makes a bit more sense than pinyin for Mandarin phonetics? Looks like it could save unnecessary typing on #Chinese keyboard inputs, too. #languages

Really fascinating piece of SF history: The Chinatown Telephone Exchange

"Both male and female operators had to remember nearly 1500 names along with the owners place of residence. They had to know all of the languages spoken in Chinatown as well as all of the different dialects. These operators knew all of the 4-5,000 residents of Chinatown. They knew all of the extensions for the businesses and residences in the area. They handled more than thirteen thousand calls a day. The phone system was also a method for contracting labor. Employers called with job offers and the operators would know to whom to put them through."
