This week I've been mainly reading, no. 217.
Sarah Perry's modern gothic novel Melmoth (2018) is a real treat; both a narrative of shame & a fictionalised dossier of accounts of Melmoth, a witness to the Resurrection condemned to wander the world for eternity for denying what she saw (and finding those equally denying sin), it offers a modern take on the heroine exposed to a (here named) horror. The ending is a little weak, but by no means spoils a tour-de-force.
